On the release of “First Time,” the band’s first single and video since 2009

Joe Jonas: We had planned a big, elaborate video, but the song leaked, so we had to think of a way to make a video in a short span of time. Nick was on his way to host the Miss USA pageant in Vegas, so we figured, let’s shoot a video in Vegas and fly in all of our friends. We spent the money we had for the video to throw a party and film it. People assume that we’re still these young kids. It shows us all as adults having a good time and enjoying ourselves.

On taking time off to focus on solo projects

Kevin Jonas: For seven years, it was nonstop. We had moments where we got frustrated with one another and we really just needed time alone. You can imagine what it’s like for a band to be together all the time, but imagine if they’re family, too. Taking that break was so nice because we worked our asses off, but we did things for ourselves. Then, we came back at the right time to do this all over again.

On Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance

Joe: [Hesitates] It wasn’t my favorite performance of hers. I think that there’s one way of saying you’ve grown up, and there’s another way — I think that’s her way. Look, people are talking about it, so I think it’s working for what she wants.

Nick Jonas: She’s smart. She’s very smart. We’ve always known that about her. She’ll always be successful. [The performance] was funny — I was laughing.

On maturing

Nick: Something we’ve been more comfortable with this go-round, rather than three or four years ago, is being more opinionated.

Joe: You get to this point where you can’t live your life trying to satisfy everybody, personally or as a musician. Somebody’s going to find something negative. So we were like, Let’s just be who we are and have opinions — whether it’s on politics or music — and really show who we are as people.

Kevin: With being able to take back masters of our songs and become our own bosses in a way, we have a lot of people hearing new stuff, and maybe they have had misconceptions in the past of who we are as a band. At the end of the day, I think people are surprised to know that we’re a rock band at our core. Things have started to shift where people are starting to feel the passion behind the art that we’re doing.

Joe Jonas: habíamos planeado un video grande y elaborado, pero la canción se filtró, así que tuvimos que pensar en una manera dehacer un video en un lapso corto de tiempo. Nick estaba en camino para albergar el concurso de Miss Estados Unidos en las Vegas, así que pensamos, vamos a filmar un video en las Vegas y volar en todos nuestros amigos.Gastamos el dinero que teníamos para el vídeo en una fiesta y lo grabamos. La gente asume que seguimos siendoestos chicos jóvenes. Nos muestra como adultos pasando un buen rato y disfrutar de nosotros mismos. 

En sacar tiempo para enfocar solo proyectos 

Kevin Jonas: durante siete años, fue sin parar. Tuvimos momentos donde tenemos frustrados uno con el otro y sólo necesitamos tiempo solos. Te imaginas lo que es para una banda estar todo el tiempo, pero imagínate si son familia, también. Ese descanso tan amable porque trabajamos nuestros traseros, pero hicimos las cosas por nosotros mismos. Luego, volvimos en el momento adecuado para hacer esto de nuevo. 

Sobre la actuación de Miley Cyrus VMA 

Joe:  no fue mi actuación favorita de ella. Creo que hay una manera de decir que has crecido, y no hay otra forma, creo que esa es su forma. Mira, personas están hablando,así que creo que está trabajando para lo que quiere. 

Nick Jonas: Es inteligente. Ella es muy inteligente. Siempre hemos sabido sobre ella. Ella siempre será exitosa. [La actuación] fue graciosa— me estaba riendo.

Madurez:

 Nick: algo hemos sido más cómodos con esta vez, en lugar de tres o cuatro años, está siendo más obstinados. 

Joe: Llegas a este punto donde no puedes vivir tu vida tratando de satisfacer a todo el mundo, personalmente o como músico. Alguien va a encontrar algo negativo. Así estuvimos como, vamos a ser lo que somos y tener opiniones — sea en política o música — y demostrar que somos como personas. 

Kevin: Con poder recuperar a amos de nuestras canciones y se convierten en nuestros propios jefes de unamanera, tenemos un montón de gente audiencia cosas nuevas, y tal vez han tenido ideas equivocadas en elpasado de quiénes somos como una banda. Al final del día, creo que la gente se sorprende al saber que somosuna banda de rock en nuestra base. Las cosas han empezado a cambio donde la gente está empezando a sentirla pasión detrás del arte que estamos haciendo.
